Nature isn’t just crucial to our shoes’ materials, it’s a crucial inspiration for our shoes’ technical design. We have learned lessons from natural evolution and implemented them into the final product to improve functional performance.

The ABACA upper features a durable, water resistant Cradle to Cradle Certified canvas made from banana tree fibres. The sole’s tread design is influenced by patterns found in coral which maximises surface area and reduces weight. The gaps also create air pockets underneath the zero plastic PLIANT sole which improves grip.

The inside of the shoe includes a FlotActiv Wave motion comfort system which has been designed to imitate wave motion, meaning a greater energy return with every step.

Constructed using pre-industrial methods without heavy machinery the fully circular ABACA shoes are not just designed for style and comfort, they are designed to return to earth, providing micronutrients that enable future plant growth.

SUSTAINABILITY CREDENTIALS

Rather than focus on the speed at which the shoes break down, PURIFIED looks further and explores their impact on soil health.

Shoes were tested under ISO 20020:2015 to measure their level of toxicity. Shoes were exposed to soil conditions for 90 days, the soil was then inspected for toxic chemicals and found to have exceptionally low levels.

Tomato and Barley Plants were then introduced to this soil to assess how they grew (OECD 208 - plant response). When planted in this soil, it was discovered that under certain conditions the plants grew better than compared to regular compost.

PURIFIED will publish these results upon completion of the tests. A comparison test; looking into how an industry standard trainer might perform, is currently underway.

PURIFIED creates naturally circular products by embracing Zero-Plastic design. Comprised of only organic components, PURIFIED shoes can safely be retired at end of life to promote the next phase of plant growth.
